His daughter becomes the driving force in the story that follows.The main characters are the daughter of the barrister and the son of the executed man, who was a teacher wrongly convicted of killing one of his pupils.The daughter has been brought up by a father whose life has been completely undermined by the experience of seeing this happen. She seeks out the son to try and right the wrong and finds him on a volcanic island in the South Pacific. He needs a lot of persuading but eventually he comes to England and they embark on finding out who committed this murder.
